A Brief History of The Marino's Deli
In March of 1985 Marino's Deli was opened, but the Marino's tradition of serving quality homemade foods began long before. To truly get to the origin, you have to go back to Ralph Marino, born in Italy in 1896. Although he passed away long before Marino's Restaurant was even thought about, he is the one who taught Mary Marino (his wife and out founder) much of what she knows about food and cooking. Mary Marino affectionately known as "Nana" by most, established her reputation between the 40's and the 70's while cooking in various well known Minneapolis area restaurants. In March of 1969, Nana's sons, Jim and Louie Marino, opened Marino's Cafe so that she had a place of her own to serve her delicious homemade recipes.

As time passed, the loyal customers steadily increased. It became evident that the operation was too much for one person to maintain and action had to be taken to ensure that Marino's remained a family owned and operated restaurant.

Nana's daughter Vicki, her husband Ed, and seven children were residing in California. Ed had recently retired from the U.S. Marine Corp and the restaurant business seemed like a good post-retirement job. In August of 1971, all transactions were completed to purchase the restaurant from Louie and Jim. Marino's was now owned by the Matthes family, however, Nana Marino still continued to reign in the kitchen. With her guidance, the Matthes family learned the finer aspects of restaurant management, as well as her secrets for preparation of authentic Italian and American recipes.

As the years passed, it again became apparent that another demand had to be addressed. People wanted to take Marino's food for their personal use at home, the office, cabins, parties, etc. Nana's grandson Ralph owned a building on Johnson Street, so in 1985 the Matthes family opened Marino's Deli to facilitate the needs of their customers.

Since then, the deli has become full service, serving meals for dine in or take out, deli trays for all occasions, box lunches, and of course all of the food we serve has been made available for you to prepare in your home. Ralph, along with his sister Michelle and the other employees of Marino's Deli, will continue the tradition by serving you the same quality foods in the same conscientious and courteous manner in which Nana Marino began doing almost 50 years ago.

Thank you for your continued patronage. It is much appreciated.
